Bush Regeneration in Cessnock

Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, Abermain and Weston grew up on the old South Maitland coalfields. The remnant bush around Cessnock and Kurri Kurri includes Lower Hunter Spotted Gum Ironbark Forest and Kurri Sand Swamp Woodland, both listed threatened ecological communities, and Werakata National Park near Cessnock and Kurri Kurri protects stands of both. Regeneration in these forests means working around native seedlings and groundcover, not clearing everything under the canopy.

To the south and west, the LGA extends into the Watagan Mountains and the country around Yengo National Park, so many rural properties share a boundary with continuous bushland. That interface is why so much of Cessnock is mapped as bushfire prone land, and why asset protection zone maintenance is a routine part of land management here.
